Training patterns of play in tennis is defined by the ITF as “Training of the shot selection in game
situations”. By training these patterns, players learn what their options are when a ball is hit to them in different game situations. Training also helps their decision making for their next shot. An example would be when a player hits a short wide serve to the deuce court which opens up the court, they could practice hitting their next shot into the open court or hit behind their opponent to wrong-foot them as they are recovering towards the open court.
